Radiculopathy is a condition that can trigger (back pain) and other types of pain. Radiculopathy is defined as a condition that is caused by nerve compression, injury, or inflammation. These factors trigger (back pain) and leg pain. This blog post offers an explanation of the condition and its causes.

Lumbar Radiculopathy

Radiculopathy can affect any spine area, from the neck down to the lower spine. Radiculopathy that occurs in the lower part of the spine is known as lumbar radiculopathy.

Lumbar radiculopathy is not to be confused with sciatica. The two terms have been used interchangeably to describe the problem brought about by inflammation or compression of a spinal nerve in the lower back.

Lumbar radiculopathy is actually the medical term that describes the condition in which there is nerve dysfunction due to compression. Sciatica, however, is the lower (back pain) or leg pain that is caused by lumbar radiculopathy.

Causes of Lumbar Radiculopathy

There are several reasons why lumbar radiculopathy occurs. Herniated discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease and nerve root injury are some causes. Scar tissues because of previous injuries can also result in lumbar radiculopathy.

The condition which causes  compression of spinal nerves worsens and can have another effect. The increased pressure in spinal nerves over time not only damages the nerve but also damage or irritate the peripheral nerves beyond the spinal cord.
