Accidents that cause spinal cord damage are some of the most dangerous that an individual can experience. Spinal cord injuries have potential to be life-threatening and can result in long-term paralysis. Spinal cord injuries occur most frequently in men between the ages of 18 and 35 and often happen because of motor vehicle accidents. Older adults have the second highest rate spinal cord injury due to their high risk of falls. Sports such as skiing, diving, gymnastics, football, and hockey also present a significant risk of sustaining spinal cord damage.
Taking the time to plan and use the following safety tips may help prevent a spinal cord injury:
- Make sure to always put on a seatbelt when operating or riding in a motor vehicle. Don’t drive when using alcohol or drugs.
- Always wear a helmet when riding a horse, motorcycle, or human powered vehicle like a bicycle or skateboard.
- Prevent falls by keeping foot traffic areas clear of clutter and debris. Use nonslip mats/rugs on floors, in bathtubs and showers, and maintain dry floors
- Install railings on all stairways and use non-slip strips on smooth steps.
- Families with young children should install safety gates in areas where falls could occur.
- Inspect all playground equipment before kids use it.
- Supervise swimming pools closely to make sure that neither children or adults get pushed into the water. Keep the area clear of hazards that could result in a fall
- Diving should only take place in water depths over 9 feet. Always check water depth before diving.
- When playing sports, always wear every piece of protective gear that the individual activity requires.
- Avoid participation in extreme sports such as bungee jumping, cliff diving, and skydiving.
- Provide direct supervision for children who are using a trampoline.
Taking the precautions to eliminate accidents can help prevent many spinal cord injuries from happening.
